What Are
Dental Implants?
Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth when other methods are not
adequate. The procedure involves replacing the root portion of a missing
tooth with a dental implant, which then serves as the anchor for a new
tooth.
When Dental Implants Are Appropriate
Many times when patients are missing teeth a dental implant may be the
treatment of choice. The adjacent teeth could be compromised and not able to
support a long span bridge. Another reason for choosing an implant is that
the patient wants to conserve tooth structure. Many times the adjacent teeth
are perfect teeth and preparing them for a bridge is contra-indicated.
Another added benefit of dental implants is bone preservation and
maintaining the contour of the gum tissue. With little or no restorable
teeth available, dental implants are a great alternative to removable
dentures.
