Dental crowns are called for when a tooth is badly decayed. Either there are existing large fillings, or a large area of the tooth has broken down due to loss of tooth material. A crown may be required in the back of the mouth, where a lot of chewing takes place, or in the front – where your teeth are most visible. In that front portion of your mouth, where your smile shines through, you will want a dental crown that has all the appearances of a natural tooth – a life-like porcelain crown.
Dental crowns are placed over the entire tooth to reinforce it and compensate for the loss of material. There are many types of materials used for crowns. Dental crowns can be made from metal (ie., gold), ceramic material such as porcelain, or a combination of both.
Years ago only gold dental crowns were made. With the advent of plastic and porcelain, these materials were applied to the gold and the crowns began to look more natural. Full-porcelain dental crowns are fabricated in a manner where their full thickness is porcelain (dental ceramic). These crowns display a translucency that makes them the most cosmetically pleasing of all of the different types of dental crowns. As a result, we now use predominantly porcelain crowns for optimum esthetics.
